Protecting a newt from a digger

    Thanks for the tips Dave Humby and BobFlannigon.

    There wasn't a surface reflection at that time but it was really difficult to see the newts on the camera screen due to the sunlight so I couldn't properly tell where I was focusing. I'll look up in the manual about the metering mode.

    Hopefully I may get some better photos at some point.

    I was just checking out the pond when this male smooth newt made an appearance near the surface:

    Slightly clearer photo than last time but I still need to improve my technique and check out the camera's metering mode. I could just about make out a crest so I think this must have been a male. I then spotted another two near the beach of the pond, but the photos didn't come out and I couldn't see if they were male or female. But we've got at least 3 in the pond now so we're very pleased.

    Hopefully I can report back with some much better photos once I've got more practise!

    lol - I was just checking out some photos with another purpose in mind and just spotted this from a few days ago. I took a photograph of the iris versicolour but have only just now spotted the newt to the left of the photo between the rocks:

     So there is finally a clear photo of a newt in the pond!
