What stripped my plum tree buds?

Last year my 4 year old plum tree was stripped of many of its buds, leaves and new growth one day in Spring. Some thin branches were also damaged, suggesting a heavy 'body' (or two) broke them. I suspect pigeons, as we have a lot which visit our garden. We also have frequent visiting bullfinches, but imagine they would not have wreaked the havoc we were annoyed to find. Any suggestions on how  to protect this year's growth?

I suspect you may be correct in your suspicions image and of course it may well have been both - not sure what you can do to keep them off image
