  • Thanks Hostafan. I'll follow your advice on the depth to plant my bulbs
  • Hostafan. A quick additional question that your handle has just prompted. A rather over zealous hedge cutting contractor has destroyed all the leaves of my young sum and substance hosta with a rake. I had to cut off all the leaves. Will they grow back next year?

almost certainly. If we have some more decent weather, it might well produce a flush of leaves.

Sum and Substance is a monster, I love it.

  • Awesome!
  • I've just read an article on Sarah Raven's webpage that advocates placing the bulb as deep as 20cm under the surface as this helps protect the bulbs and increase the chance of a second year of flowers. Do you follow this advice?

dare I suggest that hostas make excellent companion plants with tulips? image

The usual rule with bulbs is to cover them with twice their depth of soil.  20cm is a bit deeper than that but who knows?  I think too deep is better than too shallow.  You could do an experiment!

I should think hostas and tulips would go well together Hosta image  The similar-shaped leaves would complement each other and give a good background for the bedding plants.  But what do I know?

Steve, tulips do like to be planted deep. more than the twice their depth rule of thumb for most bulbs.
