Mesembryanthemum- another I'm trying to grow from seed for the first time this year.
Magnolia I love them but have never had one.
Busy-Lizzie I didn't realise you were spending any time in Newhaven. Thought you would just drive through like most people do lol. Paradise park is my local GC.
Hi Bev! We were staying in Eastbourne so we drove through more than once, went to Alfriston and Lewes. I thought of you and your pretty window boxes. The day we went to the GC it was pouring with rain so we left before I'd finished looking. We'll be back 2nd half of June and hopefully do some garden visiting.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
Magnolia is lovely in other people's gardens but I've never wanted one. Mahonia smells gorgeous but I don't want one again. Malus, as in apple trees, beautiful, my blossom is almost open.
...^yes, nowadays I like to see Magnolia's in other people's gardens too, although Stellata is so gorgeous for smaller plots... when in Cornwall I had a 'soulangiana' Magnolia and grew a climbing rose called 'Blairii No. 2' through it....
Busy-Lizzie,
I used to live near Eastbourne and frequently went shopping in the town, I loved it there, some beautiful garden terraces all along the promenade.. don't know if you saw them...
Alfriston was a village we used to visit a lot, lovely little place, great kitchen shop and cafe's... cakes..!!... not to mention being at the foot of the South Downs, we used to go rambling from there, straight up the south downs way footpath... I think I know every path..... we used to go all over.... I miss it very much - chalk downlands at this time of year are so wonderful -... and never really sloshy underfoot even after rain...
I have just planted 2 magnolias - stellata and soulangea- and I already have 'Leanard Messell' I do love them and I have the space.
In the last house a mature soulangea was right by the front door and the perfume used to drift inside. we used to leave the petals on the pathway as when walked on the perfume came again (blow H&S). In summer I grew Clematis rehdiriana through it and the flower clusters used to drip off it,
