Patio Roses in Containers

Can anyone help me please about leaves falling off my two patio roses. They are in large planters in a sunny sheltered position and have been watered when needed and fed with Top Rose once in early Spring and then again early summer. They flowered beautifully in early summer but now the leaves are falling off! Any idea why this is happening please?

Container roses, do this sometimes Jan. All roses grown in a container need weekly watering, you can't rely on normal rain, even torrential rain, it never gets to the bottom of the pot. I'd drench it or soak it in a larger container overnight, drain it then leave it in a slightly sheltered position for a few weeks. It's probably dry at the roots and has taken exception to it. It should recover quite quickly, there may even be time for a few more flowers weather dependent of course.

My 2 half standards in big pots get watered heavily twice a week as they face south. I dead head them also. I agree with Dave Morgan, give them some TLCimage

  • Hven't got my second container rose yet but the first one (Precious love) is flowering beautifully.

  • Thank you everyone for your feed back. With regards to you Dave about watering! I feel the top of the soil with my fingers and if it is damp I do not water as I do tend to overwater my plants! But perhaps you are right I need to water less frequently but give them a good soak when I do water them twice weekly instead. I do dead head them when necessary also. Thank yu anyway I will let you know if they recover!
  • Jan, roses go dry at the roots very quickly, they're gross feeders so the top of the compost really is no guide at all. Soak them weekly, 2 gallons and let it run through. Right now the second flushes are coming through on most roses and the water will help them through it.

  • Dave Morgan you were right to advise me on giving my container patio roses a good drenching and they may recover. Well they have and yes they have produced new flower buds and a few have started to open. Also the leaves are growing back too! So thank you very much for your sound advice! I will now continue to water accordingly! Any tips on lawn maintenance with regards to what to use for feeding and autumn/winter care?
