Mildew free monardas

VerdunVerdun Posts: 23,348

I have always been put off growing monardas because of their vulnerability to mildew. image

I have looked into the latest varieties claiming to have some resistance to mildew but does anybody grow these?

Is it simply a matter of growing monardas in deep, moisture retentive, humus rich soil as I suspect?

Anyone recommend good varieties? image

    Hi Verdun

I have a Monarda Cambridge Scarlet in full sun moist area as flowered all summer like a trooper I love it and have had no problems with mildew what so ever

I got Cambridge scarlet as well it done ok, got a bit battered with the wind and the rain, no problem with mildew so far. If I remember correctly the leaves got scorched a bit when we had our week of summer in May, so a bit of afternoon shade might be needed in your tropical climate Verdun

I just bought beauty of cobham so unsure how well it going to do but look nice

The leaves both smell different as well Cambridge scarlet smells nicer.

I think I showed you 1 before Verdun. Its called GardenView Scarlet, seems to flower all Summer and has never developed Mildew.

My garden is a magnet for mildew too.

oh and Verdun, they clump up FAST, so you can make plenty of new plants without a problem very quickly.
