Prince Charles helped to rescue this at the 11th hour. it is being restored and things rebuilt in HRH style. Very impressed. The gardens are superb. Haven't been for about a year and what a difference! Worth a visit if you ever un the area

The restored greenhouses are super but can anyone explain why there is a little black door in the cold frames? Must open into the greenhouse at floor level. Bamboozled!

For heat in winter? The greenhouses probably had heat piped around or under them from big furnaces at the back of them.
In the house I grew up in the grapevines were planted in the cold frames outside, the trunk passed through into the greenhouse (it was actually a conservatory) so that the grapes were in the warmth to ripen.
Lovely photos Lily P - the knot garden / bed is looking good.
Can you go in the house yet? Seem to remember watching a programme about this place a couple of years ago.
Sorry not to reply, had a problem with the site today
yes, the house is now open and a very interesting tour, and the coffee shop excellent. We went for the Sunday Roast Lunch the Restruant. Superb

Lovely pix LP. I remember the programme but can't recall exactly what they showed in terms of the restoration.
Know what you mean pansyface
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
