What can I plant next to a pond?

in Plants

Grasses look nice by ponds, the evergreen type. Ferns and hostas too, if one side is shaded.

Irises look great.

    marginal plants are what you need,I have kingcup marshmarigold,reeds,water iris.watermint,plants that live near edge of ponds .

    Just re-read what you wrote - "Need advice on plants to put at the side of a pond that you can walk on"

    The last pond I dug out was edged with a combination of natural planting to soften/ hide the back/sides of the liner and big rocks. But because the pond was cut into the lawn, I saved some of the strips and used these to edge the front. Therefore, I was able to walk right up to the front and used this area for easy access, when, for example - maintenance was required.

    I didn't want to use any kind of hard material like slabs which would spoil the natural look.

    I saw some iris next to a friend's pond - looked lovely reflected in the water. And dogwoodfor winter reflection in pond.

    Thank you guys for all your responses. I will get my books out and check all you have suggested.

    At the minute it's covered in small pebbles but just wanted it to look more natural but be able to walk on it for maintenance etc.......but didn't want to have to keep mowing it! Don't want much do I!

    I have Gunnera Manicata next to my pond, its gorgeous and loves its feet wet by a pond - take a look at some pics of it x
