non-flowering clematis

linjoylinjoy Posts: 12

I have early and late types which do well, but several of the  midseason ones give no blooms despite watering and early tomato feed. Can i give them a kick-start next spring?  Sorry Ive lost the names but one used to carry tea-plate sized flowers and the others typical medium blooms.

Apologies.  I headed this post Non-flowering clematis, but it did not appear.

Are you pruning them in late winter/ early spring? The big summer flowering ones benefit from that.

Are you getting good growth but just no buds, or are they getting eaten before they get to that point? Slugs and snails love the new shoots and buds unfortunately.

Yes, I cut them back late winter and the have reasonable growth but never show any signs of buds.

Hollie hock.  My jackmanii has been blooming for several weeks now, its a never-fail type, but I think you just delayed yours a little, probably strengthened it though.

Give them plenty of Clematis fertiliser in the spring and again a few weeks later, and make sure it's well watered in.  All clematis are hungry plants, and the summer flowering ones with big flowers are really really hungry.

Thanks.  Will try that next spring.  Long time to wait!
