I happened to look out of the window at the right time today and caught our first proper small bird visitor in to our garden - not just perching on top of the fence. Our first blackbird:
He was then joined by a female:
Then took a proper bath in the beach area of the pond:
Our neighbour had said that there'd been a couple of male blackbirds and one female around, but I'd only seen a male sitting on the fence one evening. This is the first time we've ever seen blackbirds in our garden and this is without any kind of well grown plants surrounding the pond yet, so we're really hoping this is the start of many more visitors once it starts to take off. We're so pleased to see them visiting the area.
Lucid - lovely pix. There'll be no stopping them now! I had no blackbirds until this winter, after being here a couple of years. The garden was completely sterile. They've gradually found their way in and with the feeding they get, suitable planting and the little pond, I now have two pairs, plus others visiting.
Isn't it great when you provide a habitat and you get rewarded with visitors like that
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
I've just been watching a male blackbird rootling around in the undergrowth looking for little worms - I wonder, does this mean the eggs have hatched?!!!
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
I was so pleased to see them. I'm sure they've popped in before but I've not seen any small birds around the actual pond - only magpies and carrion crows so far. I just stood there taking lots of photos lol. I hadn't realised they would go right in to the water at the pebble beach. I imagined they would stay in the most shallow area only.
Hostafan1 mentioned in another thread that blackbirds like suet treats, so I think I'll try to get some in this weekend.
I'm looking forward to the Easter break as I'll be trying to finish off the planting and flowerbeds around the pond to give the birds more cover.

I've got a robin in my back garden - he is called Hector
Blackbirds like to sun themselves on compost heaps - its sort of like going to the Riviera for them.
