Honeysuckle help

We inherited a rather vigorous honeysuckle, which has now pulled down the trellis it was trained onto, and has become rather unruly and very woody looking at the base!  Can I just chop it back quite hard without killing it?  Would like to keep it, but it is taking over a corner of the garden!  Will it grow back if I cut into the woody stems?  Should I just take it out and start again?  Don't know the type - white and yellow flowers, still flowering now, but with red berries also.

You can be quite severe with them as far as pruning's concerned - they're quite hard to kill !  A severe haircut means you sacrifice flowers the following year, but it will rejuvenate the plant and it will probably be better than ever. If you prefer, you can prune it back a bit after it finishes flowering, and do it more severely in spring.   A general feed, water and mulch will help it's recovery too image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • I cut a very old woody honeysuckle down to  the ground in Spring,, and it has produced 4 or 5 healthy new shoots which now need tying in.

  • Great thanks - it does need a good chop, so will give it a bit of a tidy up post flowering, then go for it in the Spring!  xxx
