Does anyone know what these are?

I seem to remember all it said on the label was 'balloon plant' , they have only just flowered (same time as last year) and I can't remember what I did with them afterwards, any idea on care?

    Platycodon Grandiflorus.

They come in blue, pink or white. image

Very strong plants, which can live for many years. Deadheading will prolong flowering.

We have a lilac coloured one which appeared last year. Trying to see if the seeds from it come true.

  • I have saved some seeds from my balloon plant also. Not sure when to sow them. Any ideas? Doodiejan.

I sow some now and overwinter in a cold greenhouse, or some I store in the Salad compartment of the 'fridge and sow in gentle heat in early Spring. Both methods seem to work. OR, you could just sow them round the plants and dig up the babies, something else I have often done. Watch out for molluscs on the germinated seedlings though.

  • Very well done! It is the balloon flower plant! I have had the good fortune to obtain a couple of specimens here in the Algarve , Portugal. They are a very useful plant as the flowers are not only beautiful but edible. You can eat the roots too. I got mine from Viverplanta, Olhão when a new stock of plants for sale came in. I would really love to get some more and am definitely going to try propagation. Here is a pic of mine doing well in thirty degrees plus and heavy clay soil that chokes the life out of most other decorative plants :)image

I have 2 clumps, in different parts of the garden, and they've flourished for at least 5 years.  So far ive not had any seedlings bput perhaps I'm dead-heading them too early (I love deadheading !).
