Gertrude rising

Last winter I planted several new roses, including a beautiful Gertrude Jrkyll, which has been fantastic all summer. Over the last few weeks, two stems have shot into the air reaching about 6 feet in height. Should I cut them back now or wait until late autumn?

Gertrude Jekyll can get to about six feet in height - is it in a position where you can let it have it's head and grow to it's potential? It can also look fabulous trained against a wall.

I've got my GJ trained along a fence. I find It gives a very good display. Fabulous display this year.
It's at the edge of a rose bed with no means of support but I suppose I could put an obelisk next to it. It has been beautiful in it's first full year and the scent is amazing. Thanks for your advice
That sounds a brilliant idea David - it would be such a shame to have to 'restrain' it.

I agree. It is the loveliest of roses. I may consider moving it over winter to a sunny wall site. We'll have to see.
I'm new to the forum and it's nice to see such great and useful responses and conversations
