Growing Pak Choi
in Fruit & veg
Earlier this year I grew Tat Soi from Real Seeds, lovely stuff, slow to bolt, tasty, fast growing. But, even though it was netted, some weevils got in just before harvest time, but causing not damage. But the second sowing, started in modules and planted out when a good size, was totally destroyed by insects. They were covered in them. The beetroot were untouched. Is there anything I can do to rid the area of weevils without using chemicals? Will they disappear if the area is left free of Pak Choi for a month?
Next year I will have two areas for Pak Choi, possibly swapping between beetroot and Pak Choi to maximise soil use.

Heard on radio how old-time growers used to wave a sticky plank above the plants to catch the beetles and then give the plank to chickens for them to eat the beetles!
Yes, flea beetles. I covered the plants with fine netting, but as they got tall, the edges lifted, letting in the pests I assume. I would visit the plants and see the top side of the netting crawling with them, clearly they could smell food through the net.
