Rotten carrots

Hi, I was weeding the Polytunnel today and when checking around my carrots, found that several had faded leaves which just came away in my hand with rotten orange carrot tops. Im not sure what has happened as I've not had this before. Any ideas? Is it over watering, a disease, overcrowding? Thanks for any help Cara
