Pyracantha - which variety to plant?

Hello! New member here, looking for recommendations for a pyracantha to train on a west-facing wall 5' - 6' tall and 7' - 8' wide. Most of the common varieties seem rather too vigorous and/or too upright in habit. I want one that's vigorous enough to give an 8' spread but without looking too truncated at the top. (At present I have Solanum Crispum here - a mistake because it constantly needs decapitating to keep it to the desired height). I thought "Apache" might do the trick but it seems unavailable in the UK at present. Any colour berries. Suggestions welcomed.

  • From one David to another, Hi. image

I think probably the pyracantha variety 'Firethorn' would fit the bill. Max height & spread is 12' X 12', although you can prune it back to suit your requirements.

PS. If you are open to suggestions, maybe you would consider 'Cotoneaster Horizontalis'.

  • Many thanks David K. Am not familiar with Firethorn (I thought it was the common name for all pyracanthas) so will check it out.   Also appreciate the Cotoneaster suggestion - it's a very beautiful plant but as it happens I already have one further along on that wall and fancy something different (and evergreen) for this particular stretch of wall. Once you eliminate things that are too tall (abutilon, solanum etc) there aren't really many good modest sized wall shrubs: pyracantha, ceanothus, quince, cotoneaster, and that's about it I think.

I'm planting pyrancantha as a burglar proof hedge. They look amazing and only need pruning once or twice a year to keep them in check. I have two espalier pyracanthas out in the back garden against the fence and they are not too vigorous at all as long as you keep an eye on them.
