Cornus Controversa Need Help

Hi,

I have bought a house six months ago with a lovely wedding cake tree in a prominent position. It is a real eye catcher. However, over the last few weeks a lower branch has lost all it's foliage. Does anyone have any idea if my tree is dying or is it just a small problem I can rectify. I have included a picture of the bare branch,

Thanks in advance!

Hi it could be canker if so is there any sort of sap coming out of the stem or if could be root rot, there is no cure for bothimage
  • Thanks so much for the reply. I really hope it is neither of these problems, but it probably is.

The rest of the plant appears to be in good shape and there is a lot of fresh shoots on the inner branches. It just appears to be this branch that is in trouble. Maybe a small branch above is in trouble too. It appears to have a lot of branches cut off below the affected branch too.
