Its either just dying naturally or it has had water sitting right in the 'corner' of it. A new one will appear in the centre. You have to be careful not to get water in the centre or it will rot.
I agree with star gaze lily - It looks like sun scorch to me, it can take very little time in bright sun on a windowsill for this to happen eventully the leaf will die right back and can be removed but the rest of the plant should be okay if its moved from the sunny spot
Hi Jimbolena, I'd say your friends orchid has sunburn.
I would not put the plant in direct sunlight unless their is a net curtain or voile to filter the suns rays, they don't appreciate it.
As for watering, I water mine by dunking the whole pot in water using a slightly larger pot and leave for a good 10 mins to let the medium their planted in soak up moisture, then leave to drip and dry off, also don't get the leaves wet mop up any water immediately as they can rot. Also, their's a good tip to tell if the orchid is getting to much sun, the leaves turn a sort of reddish hue on the edges and can also go a very pale green/yellow colour too.
thanks wendylou, that explains a lot with my friends orchid, she has it on a sunny windowsill without any protection from the sun.
In her defence she was given the plant as a gift and it's flowering really well, she waters it every Sunday without fail so the only thing I've discovered thanks to this post is that it needs to be on a different windowsill.
I have been told that they like the eastern sun so my own orchid has been moved to see the rising sun, it seems that the flowers are starting to burst open, it wasn't even close to flowering, it was in a sort of limbo when it was sitting on the south west facing window. I don't water mine till it's totally dried out. How often do you water yours?
Thanks for your help, I'm going to suggest a voile to her.
Hi Jimbolena, My moth orchids are on a north-western windowsill and get afternoon sun at the moment which is to hot for them but I've put some ultraviolet blocker film stuff on the windows which seems to be working, their not getting sunburn any-more. I water when the bark medium looks very dry, but to be honest when I remember.
I found a very good webpage on YouTube that's very informative. if your friend has the internet called 'miss orchid girl', she does seem to know what she's talking about. Give her a try.
I'm glad I could suggest something useful for you to try.

I started out with one and now have 12.
here's a pic of it, I asked my friend to get a photo over. She has been watering the entire plant.
A wee question, I was told they are happy on an east facing window, any thoughts?
This one is on a SW facing window.
Ochids don't like to be in direct sun light. It could be too hot where it is.
Lovely ochid tho and such a pretty colour. Looks like it will be ok...........apart from that leaf it looks ok.
Whatever windowsill gets the sun late afternoon is the best one, or one that gets light without direct sun.
thanks star gaze lily and Gardenmaiden
