Black spot

I've got blackspot on my roses (they're all quite old plants) What does everyone think is the best way to deal with it? I know Verdun will probably say "dig em up!" but I'm rather fond of them.image

Monty Don had a piece about black spot last night on Gardeners' World.

It is a result of our clean air - no sulphur now.

Lulu, my standard treatment for blackspot is the following, strip all affected leaves from the plant and burn or bin them. Spray the whole plant flowers, stems and the ground around the stems with rose clear. Feed it and mulch it to retain moisture. Although many roses are resistant  to black spot many aren't and a healthy well fed and watered rose, is less likely to succumb. If you make it a regime, starting at the beginning of the year and repeat the process every six to eight weeks during the flowering season, it works. I do it with my own and all of my clients roses. It works. You just need the discipline to do it every year. It takes 10 - 15 mins and the rewards are always worth it.

  • Thanks for the advise image Verdun I have three climbing yellow roses two around the porch and one outside the back door.Three very tall old leggy (1 floribunda) roses dotted about the place too. Hopefully I can rescue them.
