Exotic and beautiful tree but a real nuisance

Yes I agree, it can be kept in check with persistence, the tree may be more persistent though.

Always nice to to see in someone else's garden that's is not too close to one's own.

  • Hi Verdun, It's good to hear your opinion as BobTheGardener said to expect you. I've spoken to my neighbour about the saplings growing in her garden and explained that we need to get rid of them and she is fine with that. So I've got a pack of Growing Success Deep Root Ultra Tree Stump & Weedkiller. The instructions say to avoid application when the tree sap is rising, so it looks like I will have to wait until November to March.
However, could I cut the tree down now and then cut the stump below the callous which will have formed by then and apply the stump killer in November?

I've also got some Resolva Xtra Tough Weedkiller to spray the suckers and I guess I can do that straight away.

I've only just starting to subscribe to Gardeners' World magazine and this forum is proving to be absolutely invaluable to this novice. Thankyou all so much!

  • I've just had a thought. If I cut the tree now would it make the tree sprout more? If so I will be patient and wait until November to March and cut the tree down then. In the meantime and can spray the sprouts.

  • Any thoughts on my plan?

Pruning in summer is supposed to restrict the growth, in winter to encourage it.  At least, that's the way it is with fruit trees.  And if you apply (translocated) weedkiller to the suckers, it will spread to the parent too.

As usual, somebody (probably Dove or Verdun) will give you a definitive answer on this.
