When to pick tomatoes?

MeomyeMeomye Posts: 949

I know it probably sounds like a strange question, but at what point does one 'pick' tomatoes. I am currently picking them off when rich in colour but have noticed one or two 'splitting', is this because I have left them too long and perhaps they are over-ripe? Other than that they are very tasty! image

May I also mention my peppers, they are a beautiful colour but not much bigger than 2 inches, are they still edible or have I done something wrong? ie wrong size pot, not pinching etc?

Tomatoes split because they have become dry and then have been well watered with the plant taking up the water quickly and the tomatoes burst.

  • Yes, it's probably sudden heavy rain that has caused your tomatoes to split. We have had heavy rain today, and I expect to find some split tomatoes tomorrow.

You can pick tomatoes any time after they start to colour up, and they will continue to ripen indoors. If you pick when they're still green, they will stay green.
