lavender

Why can't I have any luck with lavenders ? I do have one growing well in my garden. Not sure if its English lavender. That's like a bush lavender and grows well. But any other just dies. Iv tried drainage. Potted some but no luck. Any comments would be appreciated.

What is the soil in your garden, ? heavy hold water or light with good drainage, ours are in clay soil, seem to do alright,

I'm no lavender expert, they grow well in my garden and in pots. From what I've gained over the years -

They don't like acidic conditions - a lot of potting compost is on the acidic side.
They must have good drainage, but as far as the substrate it's planted in, 'if it dries, it dies'.
    They need a sunny position

    good luck

I admire your dedication, but why not just grow something which thrives with you?

I find for every wonderful lavender I see, I've seen hundreds of woody horrors.

Maybe a soil test would be the answer, they like well drained soils preferably limy, perhaps that,s why ours are no problem.

  • Yes maybe a soil test is needed. The reason I try yearly to grow lavender is for the bees, and scent

    Susan, I wasn't criticizing , honestly not.

I did say " I admire your dedication"

  • Never said you was. Just pointing out the reasons why. But think I'm going to give up and claim defeat.

    don't blame you.

I've just bought more agapanthus and the bees love them. No scent I'll grant you.

Try Stachys, Lambs Ears, Lambs tongues, the bees in our garden love it.
