Tree identification and question on surrounding shrub.

Hi guys

New to the forum .

Using a few free days to do some gardening, Im hoping to put a small amount of decking down in the corner of my garden , there is currently a tree there.

I intent to build the decking around the tree, however I'd like to know what kind of tree it is to see how big it might get and so that I can look after it a little better... Ive tried to identify it online but with no luck as the tree it suggests it might be from the leaves looks nothing like my tree. my tree is tall and the leaves don't start until near high up

Ive posted a picture of 2 of the leaves, as they vary slightly... they grow alternately and they seem to being eaten by ants at the moment.

secondly I have a shrub growing out of the same hole as the tree, its very close , Id like some advise on how to remove the shrub without damaging the tree. again pics included.

Id be grateful of any advice or knowledge as a newbie.

Don't know what the tree is, too far away to see clearly, but the shrub looks like a forsythia maybe.

difficult to get out without disturbing the tree, how did it get so close, or did a bird plant it there? image

  • not sure how its so close,  I only moved here in Novemeber last year and the garden was pre existing. It almost looked like it was part of the tree, i really don't want to loose the tree at all , but the shrub needs to go sadly =( some how ... image

Try gently pick axing around the base, but if it's a forsythia, it will sprout about again unless you get all the root out. You don't want to put any poison on it because of the tree Roots

  • hi Lyn, yeah I've been digging another root/ stump up near by which was left, i managed to di round it and pull it out. It maybe i have to dig round here, and get it out without harming the tree roots, :/ going to be tough !
