Pruning sickly abelia
Hello all,
A friend has a 7ft abelia shaped like a small tree. But right now, when it should be flowering profusely, I would have thought, it only has a few sprigs of fresh growth and flowers in 3 or 4 places. The rest is bare wood. I'm sure it flowered well last year. Any advice?

I thought it was too early Verdun as other people's abelias are in flower. I'm just surprised at the virtually complete lack of foliage and flowers (I wish I had a photo). What do you think to taking out some of the oldest wood quite hard back and pruning the rest by a third once it stops flowering?
Do they flower on older wood? If so I'd be better pruning after flowering to allow the new growth time to mature? Rather than in Spring?
Many thanks Verdun. I'll take a look after it's flowered - it's mild here too.
