I have to be honest, I dont think theres anything that wont grow for me.

I have given up on Lupins this year as they just get terrible Mildew and attacked by snails after flowering.

Improved Clay soil seems to be brilliant for plants.

Oh yeah and Crocosmia grows like a weed here, it grows even where its been dumped from someones garden.

Hi soulboy and thank you for that about the sunflowers. I suppose I've never given sunflowers 100% in the past, I've not fed them certainly but hollyhocks grow to 7 or 8ft in my garden without any attention whatsoever. Likewise heliopsis daises that reach 6ft easily.

I think with sunflowers the packet often says 'will grow to 20 feet' or whatever but I'm always left disappointed.

That is strange about your achillias Dove. I've grown some from seed this year (the white ones) and they're strong young plants now.

There are plants I would love to grow but have accepted that they are slug food so when in the garden centre, I glance wistfully and move on.

I can't grow anything that likes acid soil or summer moisture or winter wet or less than -10°C in winter or regular +30°C in summer. Can't grow echinacias, agastache (why?), leucanthemum, astrantia (though I try) or Wild Swan. David Austin roses grow well in big pots with pampering, lavender grows very well, clematis does pretty well.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

Lupins.  The flowers die off before fully opening.   After dead-heading, the leaves shrivel.  They never 'come back' after a good prune.

Roses!  Hopefully my Agastache will be good.

I can't grow very good clematis either. I can grow fantastic lupins though, also foxgloves and delphiniums.

Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.
