Hydrangea options

TonksTonks Posts: 54

Hi, I know that hydrangea's are hardly the most glamorous or fashionable of shrubs...

But can anyone recommend a good long-flowering pink (soft or rich)?  I bought two Endless Summer varieties a couple of years ago but they have been pretty rubbish to be honest.

I like mophead and lacecap so any suggestions are welcome!

Thanks for your responses.  I garden on Bristol clay which has ben enriched with compost for many years and now enjoy pretty good soil.  The hydrangeas are on a west facing wall so get a good mix of shade and afternoon sun.  Perhaps I'll give them one more year to get established...

Our hydrangeas are thriving this year up north as we have had so much rain, I think its the one plant you can't overwater!

Mike if you have alkaline soil I think you have to plant them in a pot with ericacous compost. I have acid soil and no matter what colour I buy they always end up bright blue, I've tried adding garden lime to the base to make them stay pink but hasn't been successful, I could be doing it wrong howeverimage

Scrap iron under hydrangeas will turn the flowers blue, we live on limey alkaline soil so ours are pink, we had friends locally who dug up a plant to move it found old horse shoes under the plant and the plant had blue flowers.
