Does anyone know what the above plant is? We saw it at Audley End, an English Heritage property in East Anglia and would like to buy one but have no idea what it is!

Ricinus - grown as an annual in the UK as it is not hardy.

Also very poisonous so needs to be used with common sense and kept well away from small fingers but is grown very safely by thousands of gardeners.

Vendée - 20kms from Atlantic coast.

I think it might be a Castor Oil plant Bill & Ben (weeeeeed ! image )

Try a Google - if it is, I think it is easily grown from seed - although I've never tried them myself. You might want to check out any warnings about toxicity if that is a concern to you.

  • Many thanks. I now remember a neighbour gave me one of these (very small) a few years ago but it didn't survive long and didn't reappear the following year - now I know why! They were quite stunning in the formal gardens at Audley End so I might given them a go next year but far back in the bed away from small fingers. Thanks again for the fast responses.
