The annual ones will do that too Rachel if you don't give them any support to go up. I've stuck mine in amongst other plants this year because they're never going to get going - I was too late sowing.
I also sowed some once in a huge pot ( about 2 -3 feet high) - with no support. They went up, then down the sides of the pot and back up again trying to do what they normally do. It looked very pretty
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

Don't plant the perennial scrambler sweet peat , yes its very pretty, but smothers every other plant it comes to, & when it finishes flowering it just leaves a mess, I have been trying to get rid of it, & with little success, & if any one knows how please tell me , I,am new to this site so don't know if what I comment gets seen!
OK, so good to have the warning! May just go with another type and let it scramble rather than climb. There are lots of lovely ones so I'm certain will find one that's perfect.
