If you have about 4-6 hovering outside and when one or two come along it looks as if they are 'conferring' then you have bees.
I've had honey bees in my chimney for at least 3 years now, the colony split into two in July but there are still plenty left. They are no trouble and very welcome to a disused chimney. They do seem to range away from my garden a lot.

I didn't see any activity from the chimney this morning but it was damp and cool when I left for work.
Hopefully they'll still be up when I get home so I can investigate further.
It would be fab to have a swarm but a wasp collection is pretty funky too, whatever they happen to be
