tomatoes

Can anybody tell me why my Beefsteak Tomatoes this year are growing pear shaped, instead of round? The same is happening to my daughter's which are in her large greenhouse. Hopefully they will taste just as nice, but obviously won't slice as well as round ones.

Did you share the same packet of seeds,

  • We bought the plants at a garden centre as beefsteak. Also bought plum which are growing as normal, but the pear shaped beefsteak are growing bigger than normal plum tomatoes. I might send a picture of them to the garden centre to see what they have to say.

The first time I read that I missed the apostrophe and wondered if your daughters were growing pear-shaped! image

  • No, fortunately my daughters are both beautifully slim!!

Sounds like one of the ox-heart varieties to me.

  • I have sent a pictures through to the garden centre, and am waiting to see what they have to say about it.

Do you have the name of the variety you've grown?

Sounds like the plants were mislabelled. Very common. Are the rogue toms all essentially the same? If not, could be crossed seeds involved.

  • Whoops - my mistake entirely!! I've just looked at the label on the plants, and although first look shows the lovely round tomatoes, second look shows that they are actually heart-shaped, going to a point at the bottom - hence pear-shaped at the moment.  The variety is Coeur des Boeuf, which translated I think means Beef Heart!! I must admit I didn't actually look at the name properly - just wanted beefsteak as I have grown before. Anyway, according to the label, they promise to be very tasty, and ready to harvest earlier, so I'll keep you all informed.  Thanks for the interest you have all shown!! x
