Black spotted Discovery apples

Most of my Discovery apples are either covered in black spots or rotten this year. I have had the tree for 30 years and it has always had bumper crop of delicious apples, maybe a few rotten ones but no black spots. Can anyone tell me what the problem is and how to prevent it coming back next year.

It sounds like bitter pit to me. https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?pid=607

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
  • Interesting article, it says lack of water could cause the problem. I usually let mother nature do the watering for me but this year we have had some unusual weather. The article also says you can peel the spots off and eat the apples, will give it a go.
