Has any poster had practical experience of 'hugelkulture'?

Hello.

I recently took over an allotment and a reptile and amphibian society are enquiring as to whether I can spare a bit of the plot over to the permaculture method of gardening which in the german translates as 'wood mound' or 'wood culture.'

There are 2 angles to this. It is organic gardening but the society hopes to conduct an experiment to see whether wildlife is attracted to the wood mound.

Has anyone used or seen this form of gardening?

Have heard of it but not tried it in my own garden.  It's been featured on GW in the past but not for a while.

Supposed to be ecologically very sound and good for biodiversity.
