Large fence needs painting / staining - suggestions?

I've got a fairly large fence, just shy of 30 panels, approx 20 pretty rough wood and the remainder slightly less so. I'm not sure whether it's best to paint or stain them? I started looking at colours thinking a nice green or modern looking a grey might be nice but the ranges with these kinds of colours seem very expensive. Any suggestions or advise before I undertake this task and buy paint/stain appreciated. Should add its a modern housing development.

Thank you!

No advice on the paint type but I always paint my fence using a roller. Much quicker than a brush. You will need a few rollers as the wood is quite harsh on them but well worth it.

I always use Butinox on my fences as it lasts so long but prohibitively expensive for your big fence. Once you have checked the price for that it will make stuff like Cuprinol quite cheap!

I use creosote for everything, I think I am addicted to the smell of it.

It's a real mix of different panels pansy face all different colours, so yes I think leakage may be an issue.

For what it's worth Pinkie, I have always found that the cheaper wood finishes flake off and / or fade after one or two summers. The more expensive stuff lasts longer so, in the long run, probably doesn't cost anymore (in terms of money) than using cheaper products and it is a lot cheaper in terms of your labour. image

I would go to a local builders merchant and chat to them about the best product to use. They will have good product knowledge, will be able to supply in trade quantities (which is nearly always cheaper) and, if you smile sweetly and ask, they may well give you a trade discount - especially if you tell them you are going to need lots of paint & other materials for the house etc in the future. At least 2 of our local merchants play the game for me and I get a straight 20% off everything. Had to provide bank details etc but it was worth it.

I too,  am about to embark on staining a huge run of fences and newly erected gates..imageimage

Just currently at the research stage as to the best....but choose an oil based (rather than water based) stain or paint.

Sorry if I am teaching Grandmother to suck eggs - but you can tell by how you clean your brushes i.e. water or white spirit.

  • Yes, I really much prefer working with water based paints, but it must be said that alas oil paints are still much superior in quality. So I use water paints on fun project that I might like to repaint in the not too distant future and oil paints on things that are supposed to last.

With that amount of fencing I might not be too keen to repaint every two years!
