It took six months and a bucket of rat poison to get rid of them.
The birds still come to my garden,I wouldn't worry about the birds starving as they have stopped breeding now and seed, insects and berries are in abundance.
there was a programme about this subject on tv, next door were plagued by rats, and it was a bird feeder from next door, but the chap had also put dog food on the floor and water for hedgehogs!
a lot of councils these days charge as well! ours did. I back onto allotments and have had problems in the past, but the neighbours have bought cats which seems to have put them off,for now.like you say, we are all living 6 foot away. apparently...yuck!!
