I use netting bought from Wilko on a roll , it is more than ample and cheap . I push some canes in the ground around the perrimeter of the kale patch , at an angle pointing away from the plants and stretch the netting over the canes, secure the netting on the ground with shorter cane ' pegs ' or simply large stones. Seems to be working so far .

Thanks for the suggestion Dells, I thought I'd have to come up with some cage construction but your method looks easier.
