Stone fruits (cherries/plums etc) must not be pruned in the autumn/winter or they are likely to get Silverleaf Disease.

The time to prune cherries is around midsummer - lots of info here https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?pid=318

I believe so Busy-Lizzie  image  I am really surprised though because it's still Summer!  As it's preparing to loose it's leaves, am I okay to prune it now or not?

  • put it in the ground it will do much better. Growing in pots restricts root growth which takes nutrients from the ground. As in bonsia, which translates to plant in pot. You would need a huge pot to get descent fruit from it. Remember a tree would have around twice as much growth below ground as on top. If I were you I would plant it in the ground. Dig a hole twice the size of the pot, fill it with a good compost with a handfull of bonemeal. This will give the tree a good start and help its roots to spread out. A.nd make sure you water it every day, whether it has rained or not, til at least the middle of autumn. The roots will be growing even if the leaves drop ( cherry trees ornamentel or fruit do tend to drop their leaves early ).

    Hope this helps you, Gary
