privet hedge sickly at base
Hello we have a privet hedge in a coastal location, at the bottom it looks as though it is dying in a patch about 50cm wide. I have been advised that I should not cut the top of the hedge as it would "kill the shrubbery below, resulting in an unsightly mess.". the top of the hedge is about 3 ft taller than the rest of the hedgerow and looks very silly. I have attached some photo's. I wondered if the advice I have been given is correct or whether I can level the hedge off. Thanks

Thanks Jo47 that would certainly seem logical and this hedge is quite big up top. I have tried to attach a clearer image of the leaves for identification, I'm not there at moment so can't get a better one. Thanks all
