plastic greenhouse-where to put it!
in Talkback
Hi I have got the seed growing bug and have just bought a seed growing plastic tiny greenhouse thing. I have a north/east facing back garden. Where would be the best place to put this? I have put it for now on the sunny east facing wall but of course there will be less/no sun there in afternoons. I grew my seeds last year indoors but the house was covered with seed trays and it became a bit anti social!! Apparently!!!

mine is on a south facing wall, although it gets sun in the afternoon because of where it is placed, i would say though to securely attach it to a wall, mine blew over full of seedings in pots and it was chock full and the whole lot tipped out of their pots, then i secured it with a bungy to hooks on the wall and it still blew over so now it has one at the top and one at the bottom and seems fine in the wind.
It should be fine in that aspect Potty Lotty. They get very hot inside anyhow and seeds would cook in a gh if there is no shade/air. As sanjy67 says it will be best if you secure it to a fence or wall as high winds will blow it over. I anchor mine with both bricks and some compost in a bag along the inside bottom rungs to stop it blowing over. I've had accidents in the past.
Good luck.
My garden is on the Northerly side of our house so the blow away greenhouse as we call it is down the bottom of the garden where it gets full sun all day this time of the year, it gets useful amounts of sun down there from March until October and then it gets packed up and put away. It is weighted down with a concrete paving slab with a bag of sand on top which takes up the bottom shelf, it has never blown over even in the highest of winds but I have taken the precaution of tying the mesh shelves onto the frame and tying the side frames together because it has been known for the cross tubes to come out of the plastic side supports, if it is really gale force windy I do take the precaution of looping a rope around it tied to something substantial like the patio table for instance but that is a rare event. At the moment I have three cayenne pepper plants on the top shelf, trays of lettuce, winter savoy cabbage, kohl rabi and cuttings from wallflowers and pinks.
marvellous! I can now get cracking! thanks folks.
