Problem With Camillia

moved a mature camellia earlier this year.It seemed to have taken ok with buds appearing and leaf growth.Over the last month or so all the buds have dropped off and all leaves have turned brown as if dead.On inspection scraping back bark the main plant seems to still be alive. What should I do now as the plant is very unsightly.

    How " mature" was it?

    When did you move it?

How big a rootball did you get?

Did you remove some top growth when you moved it?

All of these might be factors.

Sounds like it's struggling to cope.

I'd reduce it by about 50%. Drastic, but by the sounds of it, might be your last chance.

Give it a good feed and keep the watering up to date, including spraying water onto the plant itself.

Just wondering if it's suffering from bud drop?

    The RHS on this page...

    https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?PID=771

    under the Flowers section has...

"Adverse conditions, particularly dry soil, occurring in late summer or early spring can cause the buds to abort. Ensure that your plant has an adequate supply of water during this critical time. Excessive or late feeding can also lead to bud drop – do not feed camellias later than the end of July."

I always give my camellia a good soaking once per week throughout the summer.

    Cheers Paul.
