Alstromeria in pot

I have an alstromeria that has been in the same pot for a couple of year now, this year it hasn't flowered well at all, do I assume it is pot bound?

Ditch it? Split it and if so, when?

It could be pot bound or the compost could just be completely depleted of nutrient.  Try feeding it and see what happens.  Results tend to be pretty quick this time of year.

Alternatively, try knocking it out of its pot now to see if it is potbound.  If it is you might as well repot now, nothing to lose and the possibility of flowers later in the season.

Could you put it in the garden borders Steve, it would prefer that.

  • Miracle grow has been deployed! I'm not sure my winter damp would suit it in the winter months. I've also heard it can be a bit invasive or am I making that up?

I've got some in 2l pots after growing them from seed. When I remove them from the pot, the bottom 2cm is solid root and their heaving themselves out of the pots.

I think mine need to move too.

  • Can they be split? Google seems to be a bit vague on the subject...

I'll split one of mine tomorrow Steve, hold fire and I'll tell you in a week or so if it's made it.

  • Do I get to see pics of all of them and chose the one that annoys me most to be our experimental victim? image

(If I believed in that sort of nonsense!)

  • Hi Steve, I grow it in my garden, they don't mind damp or dry soil. Plant them in the ground asap with some good peat based compost. Don't try splitting them yet, they will spread readily in the ground and split them next year. I'll try to post some photos of mine in the ground.
