Ok in respect for both conflicting opinions I'll prune a roughly 33% of the hedge (evenly, and note which ones) - and will keep you updated on what happens (and what not happens) to them. I genuinely appreciate these responses. If you're passing through Sheffield let me know and you can see for yourself. Hehe.
I planted a new yew hedge mid-October. It is about a metre high. Some side branches are 'flopping' and waving about in the wrong direction,ie.not sidewards. Shall I just let it settle in and prune in Spring (when exactly?) or should I risk a prune now ,mid-November (we already had some frost) ?
