i'd like to know too if i sow recently collected seeds from foxgloves whether to sow them now and then whether they will be strong enough to plant out in autumn, i don't have a greenhouse, just a small plastic type greenhouse that isn't very big.
I too have about 40 little foxgloves all in 9 inch pots. They have been kept in my little greenhouse at night and brought out through the day. They are quickly outgrowing their pots so I'm not sure whether I should plant the biggest ones out now or repot them in larger pots to overwinter. They are taking up too much room as I want to also store cuttings too. I live in Blackpool so much colder than the South.
PC - love demolitions - so do the slugs! I planted my delphinium seeds in the spring and now have three dozen plants in individual pots, but outside in watering trays. They are growing well, but I keep them well watered. A daily slug trawl seems essential - checking under the pots and in the watering trays - what a hassle. Anyone got any ideas on that?
Foxgloves are pretty hardy - I wouldn't plant them out just yet unless you can water them frequently - they need dampish soil to get their roots down - but they should be fine planted in the autumn.
thanks all I think I will collect my seeds and sow them in the spring like you GG not very good at cuttings but I might have a go muster will let you know
sanjy - if you're collecting seeds from the current year's flowers, they won't germinate and be big enough to be planted out this year. They'd need to be filling a 9cm (3 inch) pot by now to really be in with a shout of overwintering well in a border. You could try just scattering some where you want them to grow and see how many germinate in spring, or sow half in a tray for overwintering and potting on. It really depends how much time you have to spend pricking out and potting.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Last year I sowed delphinium seeds around September in trays. Had good germination and as I lacked a greenhouse (or even a cold frame) at the time, I left them on the garden table close to the back of the house. Most survived as little plants. However as FG says any sown now won't be big enough for the garden.
Foxgloves I sowed at the start of June last year and had plants big enough to plant out by autumn. Best to sprinkle seed, in fact I did that this very afternoon.
thank you i have plenty of time for pricking out etc, i'm just not good at all at keeping things alive in the house, I have a lean to laundry room with plastic roof attached to house that is either boiling hot in summer or freezing in winter, i'm planning on building a heated bed in there out of wires and sand etc so that might help with sowing etc

Thanks Gardening Granny. I will plant them out in September. I'm also going to give some to a friend.
