Aguilegia and powdery mildew.... New gardener

I have only recently discovered my love of gardening. This is my third season. One of the first plants I discovered was aguilegia's. But towards the end of the first season my potted aguilegeas suffered from a white powder as well as blackening of the leaves. I thought it might be powdery milldew so cut them down and threw the leaves away. The next year they came back, flowered wonderfully but yet again quickly got the se white powder and black mottled leaves. I thought Mayne they needed more air so planted them into my borders for the third season.... Now all my bedding aguilegias have it (apart from one really tall variety) I decided to dig all the affected plants up and throw them away. Can I overcome this or does it mean I can't plant aguilegias in my garden?

Maybe you have aquilegia powdery mildew. See Touchwood aquilegias website for details. It has affected the national collection.
