Beige patches on Origanum Vulgare

I bought an Oregano plant froma good gardening centre a couple days ago. Today I noticed there were small beige patches on about a dozen of the leaves as shown in this photo http://s199.photobucket.com/user/blossums/media/Random/Oregano -BeigePatches_zpspt8ufi6p.jpg.html Anyone know what that it and if anything can be done to help? I pinched off the leaves that had this on is that the right thing to do? Many thanks image

Hi Rachel, I've grown this plant from seed this year. I'm not an expert on plant diseases, could it be some kind of leaf miner? Though that's usually lines rather than patches
  • Thanks for your reply. I've just googled leaf miner damage and looked at the images that came up - it's not what I have, but if I ever spot those lines I'll know what they're cause by so thanks for thatimage

Could be a miner but probably more likely a sap-sucker like thrips or flea beetles Rachel.  Removing the affected leaves is all you can really do but it is only minor cosmetic damage.  These things rarely cause a serious problem.

I have oregano all over my garden, it's one of the most prolific self-seeders and all of it has the pale patches. I don't recall them having it a few years ago, but most definitely this yr and last yr. Almost every leaf is affected on some plants.

It doesn't seem to affect the health of the plants and they carry on quite happily and still come back the following year. But I've no idea what it is

Just had a look at a leaf through a 45x loupe. I can't see any evidence of any sort of bug/insect. I'm wondering if it's just water splashes and sunshine that has caused it.

Marjoram doesn't seem to suffer and the smaller Greek oregano is free of  patches

    This one has patches-

Hi Rachel looks like leaf hopper damage to me a sap sucker as bobthegardener suggested. I have alot of this in my herb garden and it doesn't seem to harm the plant it just looks bad. I cut my herbs down frequently to get fresh green leaves coming up. I've been told horticultural soap works well to get rid of them but I've never been able to source any myself. Hope this helps
  • Thanks everyone for your replies Checking photos on line it looks more like thrips or leaf hopper damage - some more leaves have little marks on them today again.

Do you think a a dilution of ecover washing up liqwuid would help?

Can't afford expensive horticultural soap just now

    Thanks again image
