Yes we had a rat problem earlier in the year, I rang the council and they put poison down over two weeks, then nearly two months later we found the rat dead near our bin yuk, but the problem started because I was feeding the birds fat balls near our decking area, so no more bird food, but we've also started growing mint in the garden, we've had no problem since : )
Mint hasn't anything to do with deterring rats. Tha'ts a coincidence, I have mint growing wild all around the compost bins, there are rats occasionally in that area. Not for long I must add!!
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.
Glad you posted that Lyn. It has nothing to do with mint - you'll just have another thing to get rid of if you let that loose in your garden!
I'm afraid decking that has a space below it is a very welcome site for rats looking for a good nest site so you have to be vigilant with food left lying around , especially at night.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Sheds, decking anywhere near to a reliable food source makes an ideal place for a den. A few years ago I managed to catch 15 rats in 2 days, I think I got the mother first as she was quite a size, then with no food coming to them the young un's must have followed her trail and got caught in the traps I'd set. Seemed every 20 minutes or so I would hear the traps spring shut, had to keep going out and resetting them, it kept me busy that night.
make sure you haven't got any gaps around as they can get into small spaces and you don't want them getting into your home their spines bend to squeeze into the smallest gaps you wouldn't believe , call the council they find out were there coming from and stop em
