scented climbers up a mountain
I am lucky enough to spend half my year 700 metres up an Umbrian mountain. We are having a wooden pergola built, and I would like to grow things to scramble over the top so we will end up with dappled light. I have thought of wisteria and grape (though neighbour advises against because of fruit drop onto terrace) Any other ideas please? Ideally scented by the way!

My Italian neighbours just shake their heads at everything that I suggest!! I have got the jasmine with big leaves, and that does well, and the wisteria survives, though isn't thrilled with being here. I thought that I would use that one one upright.
Where's Italophile? I'm sure he'll have some ideas ............
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Have you considered any of the rambling roses, they tend to be fairly hardy and can take most conditions
CC, I'm in Tuscany. The question isn't unique to Italy but, for what it's worth, have friends down the road just outside Cortona with a massive pergola that gets the full brunt of very hot summer sun. They planted a mixture of wisteria and clematis with a couple of climbing roses for contrasting colours. Works a treat, beautifully dappled sunlight. Copes well with bitter winters too. Grapes aren't a good idea for the reason stated.
Where in Umbria are you? Have other friends on a hll just outside Todi.
Many thanks for responses.
Roses do amazingly well here, the villagers often come to comment on mine, so that is a possibility, and I have just planted some montana cuttings I brought from UK and they are flowering their heads off, so another good idea. I am hoping that my 2 wisterias will put on a bit of a spurt...very slow so far but worth waiting for
We are in the Sibillini mountains, above Preci, about 1 1/2 hours from Todi.
