Hi all. Not really gardening, but it's all nature, innit?
I took these photos near Keyhaven a week or two back and some of the birds obviously haven't read the identification guide.
Is this really a black-tailed godwit? It's apparently supposed to have a deep crimson throat in the summer but this is sort of orangy-brown.

And are these bar-tailed and black-tailed mixed? They're not supposed to be found together..
Juvenile lapwing/peewit? Again, not quite right.

I think, having consulted my book 'cos I'm not that good on waders,
1. Black-tailed godwit
2. Black-tailed godwits, adults in moult and juveniles
3. lapwing - probably in moult

I agree with her.

Phew!
I've never heard the throat colour of Godwits described as crimson - I'd say it's chestnut.

Steve - around this time of year, you might be coming across birds with "eclipse plumage": it's very common in ducks, but also found in other species too.
Cheers Paul.
Great response! (As always
) Thanks
Maybe the 'crimson' was a bit of an exaggeration by me based on the drawing in the book I was using.
If it looks like a duck...
...here's the cue for some of you to go aaaaaahhhhhh
