Strawberries in pots, purchase now?

Hey folks I thought for next year I'd try growing strawberries in pots, I notice a lot of online retailers sell plants to be purchased in September to October. Are they hardy enough in the first winter to be planted into pots and left outdoors, or an unheated greenhouse? Or are they best put in pots indoors until early spring for the first year?

If I do get plants, should I allow them to flower/fruit next summer, or is it best to prevent any fruiting to gain a better crop in year 2?

You can plant them in pots and overwinter them in the greenhouse. Its fine to let them fruit the first year and you will be able to increase your strawberry crop year on year by potting up the runners that will appear mid summer after the plant has finished fruiting.

I've potted up runners and left them out all winter with just some horticultural fleece over them. They are all producing berries now (although it's too miserable for them to ripen this year)

Strawbs are just about indestructible in my experience. I left some out on the terrace by mistake last winter, they were buried in snow, they bounced back happily.
