Thornless blackberries

i inherited a row of thornless blackberries on my allotment. Last year we had a full on glut of them but had to put a lot of them in the fermenting bucket because they were too sharp to eat without adding half a ton of sugar. The rest went in the freezer And I do add them to cooking every now and again. We decided that it was because they didn't look like they'd had a good pruning for a few years so this year they got a very good prune.

Today there were a couple of black berries on it so we tried them. I'd rather chew on a lime than eat those!

Where am I going wrong? I have no idea what variety they are. We are going to have a huge glut of them again but I can't give them away to people if they taste like that image

Most soft fruit is sour unless it is fully, fully ripe.

    Aaahhhhhh, thanks image

  • Hi Fruitcake.. I have a thornless blackberry Oregan in my north facing wall. Grows well, plenty of fruit which if left long enough on the bush is quite sweet tasting. I've trained this on the wall...5-6 stems at a time. I'm not sure if this is helpful to you.

Thanks Fluffy Cloud image it runs across the middle of my plot and there isn't anything j can train it against other than the posts and wires that we have put there.

We had another taste test today and there is much improvement image i don't know if we are going to bother netting them, there are so many, the birds could have more than half and we would still have too many lol

  • I don't net my berries....share with the birds, although they don't bother much.
