Hypericum perforatum is a declared noxious weed under the Noxious Weeds Act 1993, in Australia. It is poisonous to stock causing photo-sensitisation. The faces and mouths become itchy and raw, preventing feeding.

Sorry to sound so heavy, but I'm quoting form my weeds control book.  They are very hard to eradicate because of the tenacious root system.

My advice is to be sure that you want to grow this plant. image

  • Which one is invasive? A ground cover one?  are the shrub ones ok?

Hi Snoodle, Hypericum calycinum is invasive, the shrubs like Hidcote are fine.

    H. androsaemum (Tutsan) seeds everywhere but isn't much trouble compared to H calycinum.

  • Cheers Nut.  My dad has given me a twig from his shrubby one - don't know what it is -  it's taken - hoping it can go into the garden next year. They garden on sand and me on clay so plants can behave quite differently.

This is the one that's a problem in Australia

but even this one will spread and spread, and is a total pain to dig out

I'd only plant it on something like a dry bank that needed stabilising and where I didn't want to grow anything else.

I quoted directly from my weeds book, Nutc. If you'd like me to photocopy the page and email it to you, I can.  Sorry to be a wet blanket.  I only was aware of it because we, as property owners, have the council weeds inspector on our backs when it's seen.  Maybe you could google the Act directly.  Whatever, you let me know, I'm happy to help.  In the end, the choice to grow it or not, is up to Byron.  Just thought I should let Byron know. image

I was referring to H Calycinum.  The best I ever saw was lining a bank under a hedge, therefore dry. About one and half feet high, made a line of yellow and looked great, but only put it where you need a fill-in.  On my dry bank it does well but has not been invasive (so far).Pat E. how can we tell that we have the garden shrub here and not the noxious weed?

linjoy. Have you had a look at the sites that Dove listed? I'm only really familiar with H. perforarum.  What can I say to help? Perhaps Google for more info, but Dove is a very good adviser. I'd like to help more, but only know the one we have here.image
